The Automation Specialist supports operations, in particular sample preparation services, with the development, maintenance and troubleshooting of automation solutions. He/she collaborates in a team to conceptualize, design, develop and implement solutions designed to optimize performance and increase the efficiencies. Further, the Automation Specialist is the first point of contact for sample preparation staff regarding the use, maintenance and troubleshooting of automation instruments and software solutions. Similarly, he/she will participate in the training of co-workers on corresponding equipment and software.

Essential Functions

  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, usability and quality of existing systems and workflows in operations

  • Participate in the development and implementation of workflow improvements in operations

  • Script automated workflows on robotic liquid handlers.

  • Troubleshoots and resolves mechanical and instrumentation problems.

  • Develop, evaluate and test customized automation technologies/platforms.

  • Adhere to the BLS software development processes

  • Work collaboratively with lab staff to build efficient automated laboratory workflow.

  • Provides automation support by coding utilities, responding to user questions, and resolving problems.

  • Development of best practices resulting in standardized and streamlines processes and efficient use of resources.

  • Responsible for efficient integration of laboratory equipment into a LIMS system.

  • Operation, calibration and maintenance of equipment, as assigned.

  • Developing and providing training manuals, SOP’s, hands-on teaching.

  • Support existing instrumentation software by programming and testing various robotic liquid handling systems.

  • Analyze, design and develop presentation vehicles including reports, queries and analytics as specified.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

Required Experience


  • Displayed competency in all Junior Automation Specialist functions

  • 2 year degree in bioengineering or chemical engineering or 4 years equivalent experience. Knowledge of programming Liquid Automation Robotics such as liquid handler, plate readers and other general lab equipment.

  • 4 years experience in the development and application of methods for liquid handling robots

  • 2 years experience in C/C /C# programming language, shown by a track record of successfully implemented projects

  • Demonstrated competence with RDBMS (Microsoft SQL Server is highly desired but Oracle, PostGreSQL, MySQL, and similar platforms will also be accepted)

  • Ability to break down, analyze and improve the functionality of program code and automation methods

  • Working knowledge of GxP requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts quickly

  • Ability to think creatively

  • Highly self-motivated and directed

  • Strong organizational skills and multitasking

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrates high level of initiative and ability to work independently

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs


  • 4 year degree in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, bioengineering or chemical engineering or equivalent experience preferred

  • Experience in low-level programming of hardware (e.g. driver development)

  • Experience in the integration of individual hardware components into automated environments

  • Experience with .net framework

  • Understanding of software development for embedded systems, preferably ARM Cortex and Atmel AVR architectures

  • Experience in the preparation of corresponding documentation (User Requirements, Testing Procedures, Standard Operating Procedures, functional and validation testing, IQ/OQ/PQ
